Pintaflores Festival of San Carlos City, Negros Occidental
Pintaflores Festival of San Carlos City, Negros Occidental
The birth of a cultural tradition
Pintaflores was born out of the people's search for a cultural identity and tradition.
If Cebu City has its Sinulog, Bacolod City its Masskara, and Aklan its Ati-atihan, San Carlos City also dreamt of having its own unique festival.
In 1992, after successfully holding two activities, the Nabingkalan Tattoo Festival and the Dances of Flowers as highlights of the city fiesta, the idea of blending the two concepts to come up with a presentation that could be considered the the City's very own started what today is one of the most popular street dancing festivals in the region - the Pintaflores Festival of San Carlos City.
Pintaflores is coined from the words Pintados, the concept behind the Nabingkalan Tattoo Festival, and the "flores", the Spanish word for flowers that dominated the theme of the Dances of Flowers.
The Pintaflores street dancing and ritual competition highlights the annual Pintaflores festival which starts November 3 and culminates on November 5, Negros Day.
It features rhythmic dances and dance dramas of life and death and the triumph of good against evil that depict the people's thanksgiving of merriment, abundant blessings and success.
As part of the Pintados tradition, the faces, arms, bodies and legs of the dancers are painted with flowers to express gratitude to man and his environment.
The street dancing is culminated by a dance ritual performed at the City Auditorium. Different dance steps and musical accompaniment add to the thrill of the competition.
The Human flower formation is another impressive part of the dance ritual that products the ingenuity and skills of the choreographers and dancers.
To give emphasis to body painting as a ritual of Pintaflores, the festival also features the Body-painting contest that provides expression to the true artistry of the people of San Carlos City.
Kwebang Lampas-Pagbilao, Quezon
Kwebang Lampas-Pagbilao, Quezon
Kwebang Lampas translated to English literally means a cave that overshoot its mark. I just don't know how this cave got its name but I think that this cave is situated perfectly on where it is. Located at the right side of the Puting Buhangin Beach Cove in Pagbilao, Quezon, this cave is accessible via a leisurely swim from the beach shore or a short trek amidst rocks and stones on the cove's jagged corners.
The entrance to this cave is about shoulder deep but once you are halfway inside, it becomes shallow because of the rock formations inside the cave that you can step-on to. There is also an exit on the opposite side where you can have a view of the left side of the cove and also the sea beyond. Because of the two-way entry/exit, this can also be considered as a tunnel. This cave should not be missed by travelers to this beautiful place.
Here are some of the photos I have taken while exploring the cave:
View Inside the Cave
Shallow Water perfect for Swimming
Clear Cool Water inside the Cave
Reflections
Beyond the Horizons... Nothing but Sea
Cave Walls and Waters
View of Opposite End of the Cove from the Cave.

Travel to Bohol and check out the unusual geological formation of hills that resemble Hershey’s Kisses. Although green during rainy and ordinary seasons, the hills turn chocolatey brown during dry season or in the summertime, thus the name.

NegOr, Dumaguete City Observe World No Tobacco Month Celebration
Posted on June 28, 2012 by Your Pinoy Tourist Guide
This year’s culmination of World No Tobacco Month and Blue Ribbon Awarding ceremony will take place on June 29 with a street parade in Dumaguete City.
The activity banners the theme, “Stop Tobacco Industry Interference,” based in World Health Organization’s (WHO) Framework Convention on Tobacco Control Article 5.3
The following concerned agencies Negros Oriental Tobacco Control and Smoke Free Advocates Alliance (NegOrTocSa), Department of Health Center for Health Development-Central Visayas, Negros Oriental Integrated Provincial Health, and city government of Dumaguete are spearheading the said event.
According to Dumaguete City Administrator William Ablong, the activity will be highlighted with a city street parade at 2 p.m. on Friday, from the Rizal Boulevard as the starting point and it will end up at the Freedom Park at Capitol Ground to be followed by a program and live band concert.
Joining the parade, Ablong said, will be contingents from the cities and municipalities with smoke-free ordinance, health officials, students, city and provincial officials.
Assistant Secretary Dr. Enrique Tayag of DOH will be the keynote speaker and Dr. Lashmin Legaspi, DOH Assistant Regional Director, will give the rationale of the World No Tobacco Month Celebration, while Dumaguete Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria and Governor Roel Degamo will also give their messages.
According to World Health Organization (WHO), tobacco use is one of the leading preventable causes of death. The global tobacco epidemic kills nearly six million people each year, of which more than 600,000 are people exposed to second-hand smoke.
Unless we act, it will kill up to eight million people by 2030, of which more than 80 percent will come from low- and middle-income countries, he said.
World No Tobacco Month celebrations will educate policy-makers and the general public about the tobacco industry’s nefarious and harmful tactics and WHO will urge countries to put the fight against tobacco industry interference at the heart of their efforts to control the global tobacco epidemic.
Blue Ribbon Campaign Awarding of Recognition, also be given for those cities and municipalities whose effort continues for the implementation of the smoke free ordinance and to be followed by the live band concert to culminates the program.
